Analyzing Music Video's - "Amplification"
This is the music video for the song "Fast Lane" by Eminem and Royce Da 5"9
This video is a perfect example of "amplification" as the lyrics of the song are heavily involved, in words- and sometimes symbols or illustrations on the screen. Amplification is where the creator of the music video uses both performance and narrative, however, rather than simply illustrate the lyrics or sounds this director will ‘amplify’ both with creative interpretation.
Amplification is evident from the very beginning of the song; the first words that Royce raps are "first verse", and these words appear on screen, so that the audience to the video can view it. The next form of Amplification used is animation to back up the lyrics and give the audience a feel for what the artist means, Royce Raps, "i'm on an island" and the video comes him standing on a cartoon island, with the words of the outside of the screen- this is a form of amplification because the 'Auteur' of the video uses both narration and performance for the benefit of the audience, it also does it in a creative manor.
Amplifying using both text and symbols is used throughout the first verse, for example when he mentions "kill ya'll with kindness" he immediately picks up the word "kindness" and uses it to destroy the words "you all" which is a effective way to visualize the points that he is making.
